While brainstorming for a future zombie apocalypse story, I searched for ways to make my zombies seem scientifically plausible. The zombie condition is often depicted as being the product of a virus, a curse, or something else that cannot be explained by science. However, what if it does not require a virus to become a zombie? As it turns out, there are many forms of parasites and fungus that take over the bodies of insects and turns them into zombie-like creatures. Also, what if there were versions of these parasites/fungus that can infect humans? I will be tinkering with this idea as I continue to brainstorm. I will keep you updated on any further developments.
Last night, my beloved pit bulls and I binge-watched the entire first season of Kingdom on Netflix. Kingdom takes place in medieval Korea as it experiences a zombie apocalypse. It was a very enjoyable show that was a combination between Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. While the Korean countryside was being ravaged by the undead, the nobles were selfishly engaging in their cutthroat politics. The first season was short, but it left me craving for more. I am already eager to watch the next season and look forward how the undead will be defeated.
I watched the film Overlord tonight and I developed an analysis on the creatures in the film. Ever since I saw the first trailer, I was curious about the exact nature of the creatures the Nazis were breeding for war. After seeing the film in its entirety, I have reached the following conclusion. Calling these creatures “zombies” is far too simple a word to describe them. It would be fair to say that they were a mixture of zombies, mutants, and super-soldiers. They are zombies because they are created from the dead and they are mutants because their flesh twists and deforms in unnatural ways. As super-soldiers, these beasts are inhumanly strong, fast, and are immune to all forms of physical pain and injury. All of these abilities made these abominations well suited for combat because they can’t die and can overpower any normal soldier. However, when these creatures are created from the dead, they are mindless and uncontrollable. When they are created from the living, these creatures seem able to control themselves to a certain degree and their minds are mostly intact. From a spiritual perspective, when the soul has left the body, there is nothing controlling the body except pure instinct. It would be like a runaway car without a driver at the wheel. However, if these beasts are made from the living and the soul is still in the body, then the body is more controllable with the exception of a few defects in the steering. Overall, these undead, mutated, soldiers would symbolize the Captain America super-soldier program going horribly wrong.
I had an interesting idea for a potential story and it involves a zombie apocalypse. When my friends and I were in high school, we watched Shaun of the Dead and wondered what it would be like if we endured a zombie apocalypse. Some of the ideas we came up with were extreme, unusual, and utterly insane. I already wrote books based on our fantasy of becoming superheroes so I may write a book based on our fantasy of surviving a zombie apocalypse. What would you do if you came face-to-face with legions of undead and the world as you know it collapses instantly? Let me know what you think.
The season premiere of Game of Thrones blessed us with a glimpse of the growing strength of the White Walkers. Their numbers have grown to the point in which their undead army can be seen as far as the eye could see like an unholy ocean of death. To make matters worse, the White Walkers have now added at least three undead giants to their army. We all saw how much effort it takes to kill a live giant so re-killing an undead one is going to be much more difficult. So far, we don’t know if the White Walkers have undead bears or ice spiders that are as big as hounds like in the books, but due to the vastness of the undead army it is likely they are there somewhere waiting to strike. I cannot wait to see the full lethality of the White Walkers this season as they continue to march towards the Wall to invade the realms of men once again. Like Euron Greyjoy, the White Walkers are the storm; the first and the last. Soon the War of the Five Kings will be over and the new War for the Dawn will begin.
