Fantasy characters tend to have a strong sense of friendship and togetherness when they go on quests. Easily my favorite example of this would be the chemistry between the hobbits in The Lord of the Rings, which consist of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck, and Peregrin “Pippin” Took. The fellowship the hobbits share have inspired relationships between fantasy characters for decades. For example, George R. R. Martin loosely based Jon Snow and his companions in the Night’s Watch on Frodo and company. In particular, Samwell Tarly is clearly based on Samwise Gamgee. I am thinking of loosely basing the relationships of my main character in my third fantasy book on the chemistry between these four hobbits.
I recently discovered something amazing and unexpected. It turns out that Amazon will be creating a new television series that will be based on The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It will not be three separate films like the Peter Jackson trilogy. Instead, it will be an ever expanding series with a currently unknown number of seasons. I don’t know how they can top the Peter Jackson trilogy because it set the bar so high. On the other hand, Tolkein’s original work included many beautiful things that were not in the films. Hopefully, we will see more of those beautiful things in this new series. I have my fingers and toes crossed as I await the first trailer.
To celebrate the completion of my sign language class and to jump start my creative juices for my writing, I will binge watch the extended edition of both The Hobbit Trilogy and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The reason for this is because whenever I write, I would do so while watching one of these films. I do this because the fantasy elements, music, battle scenes, and camaraderie among the characters helps me concentrate while writing. I have not written anything in months so if this does not resuscitate my imagination then nothing will. It always pleases me and my pit bulls whenever we visit Middle-Earth even if my pit bulls bark whenever they see either orcs or Nazgul.
