I have big news regarding the future of Star Wars! With the Skywalker Saga completed, we enter another era in the Star Wars timeline known as the High Republic Era. The High Republic Era takes place two centuries before The Phantom Menace. Apparently, this marks an age of peace and prosperity in the galaxy and the Jedi are particularly active. From what I hear, the Jedi in the High Republic Era are not like the Jedi we have seen in the past. They will be a combination between the Knights of the Round Table and cowboys. With this image, I can envision Jedi who have personalities like Han Solo. The main villains in this era are not the Sith, who are currently in hiding and will not reveal themselves until The Phantom Menace. Overall, I am pleased beyond words that we are finally expanding beyond the Skywalker Saga and we will be introduced to a new cast of characters as well as new storylines. The Force is strong with the future!
I got to see Rey’s new lightsaber, which was the first yellow-bladed lightsaber to appear in a live action movie. Yellow-bladed lightsabers have ALWAYS been my favorite and I would wield one if I became a Jedi. Yellow-bladed lightsabers have traditionally been the weapon of choice Jedi Sentinels, who focused on achieving a balance between lightsaber combat and Force mastery. This is another reason why I love yellow lightsabers because it symbolizes you don’t have to choose between lightsaber combat and Force mastery. That philosophy is why it is a perfect blade color for Rey because she seems to be gaining a similar balance in her abilities. I also like that she built her lightsaber from parts of her quarterstaff, which symbolizes that she is taking a weapon from her past as a scavenger and changing it into the tool of her future as a Jedi. I noticed that Rey’s lightsaber also had a unique way of activating. Instead of pressing a button to activate the blade, the blade emitter rotates slightly and the top of the lightsaber opens up before the blade comes out. This looks like an ancient design similar to Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber, which further highlights the connection between them. Overall, I am pleased that Rey has a lightsaber that is truly hers and not one of the Skywalker lightsabers because you are not really a Jedi if you don’t build your lightsaber yourself.
I found another video that depicted a real life lightsaber. Instead of a blade of energy, this lightsaber was a rob made from multiple metals with high melting points. Once the rod was superheated to around 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, it would glow and cut through pretty much anything. However, while the Star Wars lightsabers either cauterized or melted through anything they cut, this lightsaber not only melted and cauterized things but also set them on fire. Another feature that set it apart from Star Wars lightsabers was that its power came from a cable and power pack it was hooked up to. This was similar to the protosabers in the Legends continuity. They do not have the technology to make the lightsaber self sufficient like in the movies so they have to make do with the cable and power pack.
With The Last Jedi fast approaching, I think it is important for me to inform you of some specific details of Kylo Ren’s lightsaber. Wonder why its crimson blade crackles and sparks the way it does? This is for two reasons. One, the Kyber Crystal that powers it is cracked and therefore produces unstable energy. The crossguard was in place out of necessity because they filter out the cracked crystal’s excess energy in order to somewhat stabilize it. Two, the overall lightsaber is not properly built. As we learned in the Clone Wars show when a lightsaber is poorly built it eventually explodes. Due to this, Kylo Ren’s lightsaber is not a lightsaber at all but a time bomb. We know it is going to explode, but we don’t know when. Maybe The Last Jedi will be when the lightsaber explodes and takes Kylo Ren’s hand with it. This would be fitting because it has become a tradition for members of the Skywalker bloodline to have a hand chopped off in the middle film of their trilogy. Luke Skywalker had his hand chopped off by Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back while Anakin Skywalker had his hand chopped off by Count Dooku in Attack of the Clones. In Kylo Ren’s case, his hand might not be chopped off but blown to pieces by his exploding lightsaber. I guess we will wait and see this weekend. May the Force be with you. Always.
They finally released the title of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. Some people have speculated on who this last Jedi is, but I think we already know who it is. Before Yoda died in the Return of the Jedi, he told Luke Skywalker that he would be the last of the Jedi after he died. After his failure to resurrect the Jedi Order, I think Luke lost his confidence in his ability to train Jedi. As a result, I think Luke Skywalker intends to always be the last Jedi. When he went to the first Jedi Temple, it looks like he went there so that the Jedi could end where they began, which is fitting. Normally, Jedi go to die on Mustafar, but the first Jedi Temple is a nice choice to end the Jedi. Unless Rey can convince Luke to train her, it looks like the Jedi will die with Luke. However, because there must always be balance in the Force between light and dark, if the Jedi die out it is possible a new light side order will replace them just as the Knights of Ren replaced the Sith. Either way, I look forward to finding out if my analysis is accurate.
