REY’S NEW LIGHTSABER

I got to see Rey’s new lightsaber, which was the first yellow-bladed lightsaber to appear in a live action movie. Yellow-bladed lightsabers have ALWAYS been my favorite and I would wield one if I became a Jedi. Yellow-bladed lightsabers have traditionally been the weapon of choice Jedi Sentinels, who focused on achieving a balance between lightsaber combat and Force mastery. This is another reason why I love yellow lightsabers because it symbolizes you don’t have to choose between lightsaber combat and Force mastery. That philosophy is why it is a perfect blade color for Rey because she seems to be gaining a similar balance in her abilities. I also like that she built her lightsaber from parts of her quarterstaff, which symbolizes that she is taking a weapon from her past as a scavenger and changing it into the tool of her future as a Jedi. I noticed that Rey’s lightsaber also had a unique way of activating. Instead of pressing a button to activate the blade, the blade emitter rotates slightly and the top of the lightsaber opens up before the blade comes out. This looks like an ancient design similar to Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber, which further highlights the connection between them. Overall, I am pleased that Rey has a lightsaber that is truly hers and not one of the Skywalker lightsabers because you are not really a Jedi if you don’t build your lightsaber yourself.

NEW JEDI ORDER

With the ancient feud between the Jedi and the Sith brought to a permanent end, Rey Skywalker will have a lot of work to do to rebuild the Jedi Order. Based on what I know about the current chain of events in canon, I believe I have an idea of how Rey will accomplish this. She already has a Jedi Temple to work with on Ahch-To and she has the sacred Jedi texts filled with knowledge she can pass onto her students. Since the Ahch-To Jedi Temple is where the Jedi first began, it only makes sense that it would be the place the Jedi would be reborn. Due to her status as Palpatine’s granddaughter, she has access to Force lightning. However, she can use this infamous dark side power without turning to the dark side. For now, she may be afraid of this power, but with enough years of training, she may be able to refine this ability so it can be a weapon of the light side of the Force. This will be similar to how the New Jedi Order made frequent use of Force lightning in Legends. Rey has a Temple, the texts, and the strength to resist the pull of the dark side.

The only thing she will need next are students to train. In both The Clone Wars and the Fallen Order video game, it was revealed that the Jedi Order created a list of Force-sensitive children that were potential recruits to the Jedi ranks. Unfortunately, the Jedi were destroyed by Order 66 before they had the chance to recruit these children. The list was ultimately destroyed at the end of Fallen Order and the children remained off the grid. Those children who evaded the Empire will likely be all grown up now and have children of their own. With the Sith permanently gone, these Force-sensitive individuals are no longer in danger.

I have an idea of some individuals who are not on the list of Force-sensitive children that Rey could recruit. In Rebels, Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus and General Hera Syndulla had a son, Jacen Syndulla, who was born around the time the first Death Star was destroyed. By Rise of Skywalker, Jacen will be all grown up and have children of his own. Jacen was likely the pilot of the Ghost during the Battle of Exegol. If either Jacen or Jacen’s children are as strong in the Force as Kanan Jarrus, Rey could potentially recruit them into the new Jedi Order.

In the end of The Last Jedi, it was revealed that at least one of the children working in the stables is Force-sensitive. It was heavily foreshadowed that the child would grow up to be a Jedi. Perhaps he will cross paths with Rey and she ends up recruiting him.

Finally, there is the newly legendary Baby Yoda. Baby Yoda is very strong in the Force and is able to use powers such as telekinesis and Force healing without training. However, because he was still and toddler and had no prior training, using the Force takes a serious toll on his body. At 50 years old, Baby Yoda is a toddler by his species’ standards. If he is alive by the Rise of Skywalker, he will be 76 years old and still a toddler by his species’ standards. With the proper training, Baby Yoda would be a powerful addition to Rey’s Jedi Order.

Overall, Rey has no shortage of potential apprentices to choose from. The problem is finding them. The galaxy is vast so finding these would-be apprentices will be like finding a needle in a haystack if Rey attempts to find them on her own. Fortunately, with the help of her friends and the resources of the new galactic government at her disposal, Rey should be able to find enough students to rebuild the Jedi Order. I look forward to Rey’s quest to restore everything her grandfather destroyed. Hopefully, they will do either a television show or book series that details how Rey restores the Jedi Order.

REY “SKYWALKER”

When I saw Rise of Skywalker, I received a very intriguing revelation about Rey. She is the granddaughter and heir of Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine! That explains why she is so strong in the Force. Her grandfather was strong enough to fight a Jedi of Yoda’s caliber to a draw. In Legends, Palpatine was a dangerous Force-sensitive even before he received training and he was able to use his natural power to deadly effect when he killed his whole family and their personal guards. That power flows in Rey’s veins.

I like the thought that Rey can use her hereditary Force power for good. Rey has proven that even though evil created her and left its mark on her, evil does not rule her. The end of her story has a delicious sense of irony. The reason for this is because one Palpatine destroyed the Jedi and now another Palpatine will rebuild the Jedi. One way or another, the future of the Jedi Order rests in Rey’s hands. With Darth Sidious gone forever and no longer able to influence her future students, Rey will succeed where Luke Skywalker had failed.

Most significant of all about Rey’s ending is that she renounced her Palpatine name and Sith heritage. She did not let her bloodline define her. Darth Sidious may have been Rey’s blood relative, but he was NEVER her family. The Skywalker family (Luke, Leia, Han, and even Kylo Ren) were collectively the family she never had. Han Solo was both a mentor and father figure for Rey. Not only did Luke and Leia teach Rey the ways of the Force, but they each had their own life lessons to teach her. Luke taught Rey to face her fears and not let her heritage define her while Leia gave Rey a mother’s love and guidance. Kylo Ren/Ben Solo taught Rey to always see the good in everyone even when they are beyond saving. Along with all Jedi who came before her, Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghost encouraged Rey to take a stand against her grandfather, giving her a sense of willpower and perseverance. Rey’s interactions with the Skywalker family helped her become the person she is now. Taking the Skywalker name for herself was not just a way to honor them. It was also a way of Rey acknowledging them as her true family. When the Force ghosts of Luke and Leia appeared to Rey in the end, it was their way of adopting Rey and welcoming her into their family.

SMUGGLER’S RUN

I was completely giddy when I found out that Galaxy’s Edge had another simulator ride like Star Tours. Unlike Star Tours, you got to control the starship instead of just ride it. This was not just any starship; my godmother and I got to pilot the Millennium Falcon itself! Under normal circumstances, we would have been assigned gunners and engineers. However, due to an unknown factor, my godmother and I had to pilot the Falcon by ourselves. So, we were down four crew members and we had to evade the First Order alone! We managed to get to our destination and aid the Resistance, but we took a lot of damage, which cost us valuable credits. I love my godmother more than life itself, but she is a useless copilot. Still, it was completely fun and nostalgic to be inside and pilot the most legendary smuggling freighter in the galaxy!

A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY . . .

As I immersed myself in Galaxy’s Edge, I got to see so many nostalgic sights. Unlike the stormtroopers, I found the droids I was looking for. I saw Wild Space architecture, Jedi runes and statues, and even a flock of nunas being roasted next to a pod racer engine. I’m glad I did not eat the nunas because I didn’t want to get coaxium poisoning. For those of you who don’t know, coaxium is a type of hyperspace fuel that is potent yet unstable. It appeared in the Han Solo movie. I also found some die hard fans who spoke both Mandoa and Huttese like me and we had a conversation in both languages. I actually felt like I was in a settlement in the Star Wars universe.
