MEDIEVAL TOURNAMENTS

438px-Codex_Manesse_(Herzog)_von_Anhalt

Throughout the Middle Ages, tournaments have been a rich tradition in which knights would battle one another for money and glory. Some tournaments last a week while others last several months. The sports involved ranged from melee to jousting, which drew excited crowds from across the land. At the end of my fantasy project, I am thinning of depicting a massive and extravagant tournament that lasts for more than three months. In addition to being a sporting event, this tournament will be a celebratory event that brings the once fractured kingdom together. I am thinking of visiting the Medieval Times restaurant and the Renaissance Fair for inspiration and to bask in the roaring of the crowd and clatter of steel.

WRITING UPDATE: FANTASY PROJECT (CHAPTER 1)

I have finally started the fantasy project that I had planned for over a year. It was so thoroughly planned out that I could not wait any longer to write it. I decided to start at the very beginning, where a kingdom has fallen, a hero is born, and an adventure begins. For the character names and locations, I have drawn inspiration from the Latin language. In addition, I have drawn inspiration from Norse and Celtic mythology as well as Arthurian legend. Based on what I have planned so far, I think this is going to be an explosive writing project and I cannot wait to keep you updated.

CREATURE: HOMUNCULOUS

One of the most famous usages of alchemy is the creation of a homunculus, which means “little man” in Latin. In general, a homunculus is an artificial human being. The most famous homunculus would be Frankenstein’s monster since he was a man-made sentient being that was not naturally born. One could argue that robots, androids, and clones are real life homunculus because they are sentient beings that are artificially made. I imagine an army of hundreds of thousands of homunculus marching through the lands, creating mayhem and destruction wherever they go. It is a chilling idea to consider and I look forward to experimenting with it further.

STANLEY KUBRICK MUSEUM

I visited the Stanley Kubrick Museum and found exhibits that displayed props, costumes, clips, and story art from his various films. This is a picture of a costume from A Clockwork Orange, which was one of the darkest and most psychologically twisted films I ever saw. Still, I often imagine the so-called “therapy” that Alex went through in the film being applied to other villainous individuals I know. I also discovered clips and props from Fullmetal Jacket, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Spartacus. I even discovered films he made that I didn’t even know existed until now such as Eyes Wide Shut and that he almost made A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Overall, it was amazing to walk through a series of rooms dedicated to one man’s legacy.

INSPIRATION: SIEGE WARFARE

Sieges have always been a major aspect of medieval warfare. The overall idea is relatively simple; a small force defends a castle from a much larger army that is attempting to breach it. In my fantasy project, there will be several siege battles that involve either the main character fending off sieges or the main character laying siege to castles in order to conquer them. One castle in particular could withstand a siege for five years when at its peak.

INSPIRATION: PRAGUE CASTLE

Castles have always served as fortresses and strongholds in both medieval Europe and fantasy. The largest of these castles was Prague Castle and I am planning on drawing inspiration from the architecture of this castle for my fantasy project. When I envisioned the largest castle in my fantasy project, I thought of a fortress that was large in terms with width as well as having the tallest towers and the strongest walls. This was how I envisioned the royal capital of the kingdom in my fantasy project and it will house a secret underneath its foundations that is so great that every lord in the realm will kill for it.

INSPIRATION: BATTLE OF HASTINGS

As I mentioned in my previous posts, the king of my fantasy project will undertake a conquest in order to unite a fractured kingdom under his banner. In order to do that, he must fight the armies of the various factions in the kingdom he will rule. With this in mind, I have been imagining an epic battle between the king’s army and the combined armies of the other factions. This battle will serve as the climax of the king’s initial conquest. Even though the factions’ combined armies will outnumber his own, the king will have a little surprise up his sleeve. I have replayed the battle several times in my head and I get chills when I think about every conceivable detail. I am planning to draw inspiration for this battle from the real life Battle of Hastings, which was the battle that made William the Conquerer king of England.

WARRIOR SORCERERS

An_Arch_Druid_in_His_Judicial_Habit

As an admirer of superhuman abilities, I love the concept of magic and plan on including it in my fantasy project. Due to Fanoxean’s near extermination of Tinisha’s home world, only a single group of individuals in the entire world can use it. This organization will be a combination between sorcerers, scholars, alchemists, and warriors. One could say that they would be similar to the Shaolin Monks. In addition to the Shaolin Monks, I will be drawing inspiration from the druid priests of my Celtic ancestors. As for what form their magic would take, I will be drawing inspiration from traits of the various gods and deities of my Celtic ancestors. This will include elemental manipulation, controlling nature, transmutation, healing, and clairvoyance. Also, these individuals will be the secret puppet masters to the king’s rise to power and their reasons for doing so are elaborate. Essentially, I look forward to developing these characters further because it will allow me to reconnect with my Celtic roots.

FANTASY PROJECT SETTING

The fantasy project I have planned will depict what became of Tinisha’s home world after Fanoxean’s final defeat. Essentially, it will look like real life medieval Europe and will be the size of Europe, Asia, and Australia combined. Before Fanoxean appeared, Tinisha’s world was full of mythical creatures and magic was abundant. Now, due to Fanoxean’s attempt to exterminate all life the only mythical creature that remains are dragons and magic is a shadow of its former self. Every other life form from medieval Europe still exist such as humans, horses, etc. I will be drawing inspiration from the various cultures of my European heritage in order to create the cultures in this fantasy world. I am a mix of Celt, Scot, Viking, Irish, and French. Therefore, these will be the cultures I will be studying for this project. Overall, I look forward to developing this project further and I will keep you updated on any further developments.
