Velociraptors have gained a great deal of fame in the Jurassic Park films. However, some people don’t know that the real-life velociraptors were significantly smaller than the ones in Jurassic Park; being no larger than hound dogs. Still, despite their small size, velociraptors were as fast as they were deadly. I also like the fact that they may have had feathers because it would further connect them with modern birds.
When the whales first began, they were amphibious, crocodile-like creatures who lived in rainforests. A few million years later, whales evolved into something similar to their modern descendants. One such example is this creature: Basilosaurus. This animal was four times the size of a great white shark and ruled the oceans that existed after the dinosaurs. Their diet included smaller whales such as the dolphin-like Dorudon and any creature that was unfortunate enough to wander too far away from shore. Basilosaurus put the modern orcas to shame!
I remember a prehistoric creature that is an ancestor of the pig: Entelodont. These creatures were extremely ugly and built like tanks, but had a brain the size of an orange. Because they were much larger than modern pigs, imagine the amount of bacon and pork you would get from these creatures.
The Komodo Dragon has been the iconic giant lizard of the modern age, but thousands of years ago it had a much larger cousin: Megalania. In the Pleistocene era, Megalania was an apex predator that ruled Australia, growing between 20 to 30 feet in length. One could argue that it was this beast that inspired some of the legends of dragons. With this in mind, I am thinking of including this creature or something similar in my fantasy book and it will be the terror of the earth!
I made an exciting discovery! It looks like some people have found the means to create a real-life Jurassic Park! Because birds are the direct descendants of dinosaurs, some scientists are planning to retro-engineer bird embryos back into dinosaurs starting with chickens. Because I am a dinosaur fan, I hope this happens in my lifetime because seeing a living, breathing dinosaur has been on my bucket list. Some people would say that a real-life Jurassic Park could end badly like the movie, but if these retro-engineered dinosaurs are the same size as the birds they are made from, then they might be more manageable.
