“And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.”
In previous posts, I talked about the metaphorical ark that will appear in my dinosaur series. Now, I shall talk about the metaphorical flood. I thought about every natural disaster I could think of such as tsunamis, super storms, earthquakes, and volcanos. What if disasters such as these happened all at once and were triggered by a single event? I am planning to depict such a collection of events in my dinosaur series. It will be like the natural disasters that played a role in the mass extinctions in the past, but far worse. All of this will represent the “flood” in my story. I will be drawing inspiration from disaster films such as Day After Tomorrow and 2012.
For the doomsday prepper story I am working on, I have a pretty good idea of what kind of creature the colonists will be up against. I have planned out their appearance and capabilities. However, I will not say where exactly they are or come from. They could be aliens, government experiments, living fossils, or inter-dimensional beings. That will remain ambiguous in the story and I will leave it to your imagination. I like monster stories that leave you guessing what the creatures are and where they come from. I will apply that to my story.
The doomsday prepper story I mentioned in my previous posts will ultimately culminated in the colonists fighting a siege against an inhuman enemy that attacks their community. This siege will involve heavy defenses such as mine fields, booby traps, and A LOT of firepower. There will also be the use of underground tunnels and bunkers. It is going to be even more extreme than the medieval sieges I depicted in the Magnus Dynasty Saga. It asks an unusual question: “How do you defend your home from an invader that is not human?”
I discovered a concept community for doomsday preppers called the Citadel. It is a community that is designed to withstand the end of the world. I am thinking of writing a novella about a similar community of doomsday preppers. I am thinking of watching shows and documentaries as inspiration of how such a community would operate. However, my story will depict the community having to deal with a siege from an inhuman enemy. The irony is that they have been preparing for the end of the world and they finally got their wish.
I enjoyed the film known as Juan of the Dead. It depicts a forty year old man in Cuba who has dedicated his life to doing absolutely nothing and he has a band of sidekicks and misfits who were just as lazy as he was. When the zombie apocalypse comes to Cuba, Juan and his merry men set a zombie killing business with the slogan, “Juan of the Dead. We kill your loved ones. How can we help you?” The film was super funny with good humor as a former slacker finds his purpose in life.
I had a thought about the setting for my future zombie story. Most zombie stories revolve around zombies taking over the entire world and the world’s governments failing to contain it. However, what if the government did manage to quarantine a zombie outbreak in time and contained it in one location? Therefore, I will be depicting my zombie story in a handful of counties that have been quarantined by the government before the zombie outbreak could spread. The story will be told from the point of view of survivors who are fighting to survive in the quarantine zone.
In addition to researching how zombies could be scientifically plausible, I have been researching videos that listed countless ways in which one could survive a zombie apocalypse. With these videos and ideas, I have a treasure trove of inspiration to draw upon for my future zombie apocalypse story. Some of these videos provided ideas that were quite unexpected and might put a good twist to the story. Once my schedule opens up, I look forward to watching more of these videos. As an added bonus, if a real life zombie apocalypse breaks out anytime soon, I will be well informed on what to do to survive.
I have come to realize that the most unlikely survivors of a zombie apocalypse are the slackers, individuals who have dedicated their lives to doing absolutely nothing. Before a zombie apocalypse happens, people would initially underestimate a slacker’s survival capability. However, when the zombie apocalypse happens, the slackers prove to be surprisingly good at killing zombies and staying alive. For my future zombie story, I am thinking of making the main characters slackers. I have plenty of experience about being a slacker so inspiration will not be a problem.
While brainstorming for a future zombie apocalypse story, I searched for ways to make my zombies seem scientifically plausible. The zombie condition is often depicted as being the product of a virus, a curse, or something else that cannot be explained by science. However, what if it does not require a virus to become a zombie? As it turns out, there are many forms of parasites and fungus that take over the bodies of insects and turns them into zombie-like creatures. Also, what if there were versions of these parasites/fungus that can infect humans? I will be tinkering with this idea as I continue to brainstorm. I will keep you updated on any further developments.
Allow me to give you all a terrifying scenario on this lovely Halloween night! I am thinking of depicting a semi-apocalyptic event happen in my fantasy series. This age of darkness will be caused due to a massive imbalance in the natural order. This imbalance will be caused by the excessive usage of dark magic and necromancy so that an overly ambitious few can be immortal. As this imbalance increases in intensity, the nights will be longer and darker, the screams of the damned will be heard for miles, and unholy creatures will lurk in every shadow. As necromancy is tinkered with to higher levels, worse undead abominations than zombies will appear in the darkness. One of the major obstacles the heroes will have to overcome is destroy the source of the imbalance and bring light and life back into the world.
