FANTASY RANGERS

Ranger-Battle_for_Wesnoth

One of the most iconic fantasy organizations would be the rangers. Rangers are a militant group who specialize in swordsmanship, archery, hunting, and interacting with nature. In Game of Thrones, we have seen rangers in the Night’s Watch. In Middle-Earth, we have seen nomadic Dunedain rangers such as Aragorn who quietly defend the lands they roam through. There was a book series called The Ranger’s Apprentice, which depicts its own version of rangers. The ranger archetype has also made appearances in many games such as Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft. I am thinking of introducing rangers in my third fantasy book and how their order is founded. I will be basing my rangers on the Knight’s Templar and the Musketeers.

ALIEN DNA

ALH84001_structures

Even though I HATE the idea of alien abduction with a passion, I am VERY interested in the idea of life on other planets. In recent years, we have discovered alien fossils in meteorites and in soil samples from Mars. These fossils are just microscopic organisms like bacteria, but the fact that they exist at all is significant. I wonder what other specimens exist outside of our solar system and galaxy. If we expand our conquest of the stars, we might find even more significant evidence of alien life.

What would we do if we found perfectly preserved alien DNA? Would we use it for medicinal science or some other means? In my dystopian series, there will be alien DNA and it will play a significant role in the series as a whole.

STAR WARS EPISODE IX: KYLO REN

Star-Wars-9-Theory-Vader-Helmet-Kylo-Ren

I heard a rumor of how Kylo Ren will evolve in Episode IX. J. J. Abrams will be taking over in the film’s creation and he has HUGE ambitions in Kylo Ren’s character development. A year after becoming the new Supreme Leader of the First Order, Kylo Ren is said to become more powerful and more evil than his grandfather, Darth Vader. J. J. Abrams wasn’t kidding when he said he had big ambitions about Kylo Ren’s character development. Making him more evil than Darth Vader, the most infamous Star Wars villain of all time, is definitely as ambitious as you can get. Some may find this to be impossible, but I can see the method to their madness.

Ever since Revenge of the Sith, we wondered just how powerful Darth Vader would have been if he never became more machine than man. The Force is generated by living things and it took living flesh to manipulate it. Because of this, Vader lost most of his Force potential after he was maimed and burned alive on Mustafar. With most of his power gone, Vader never had the strength he needed to overthrow Palpatine and rule the galaxy under his own power.

Kylo Ren’s limitations in the Force are mental instead of physical, but he apparently overcomes these limitations by Episode IX. Also, unlike his grandfather, Kylo Ren has all his flesh and blood, which means his Force potential is at full power. If Kylo Ren overcomes his psychological restrictions, he would finally have access to all the power at his disposal and become the dark side practitioner he was meant to be.

In The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren said, “Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. That’s the only way you can become what you were meant to be.” Maybe the reason Kylo Ren became more powerful over the last year was because he was destroying anything that could be linked to his past as Ben Solo. It is as the Sith say, “Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.” By destroying anything linking him to his past, Kylo Ren is effectively breaking his chains, becoming stronger and more sinister with each chain broken.

In addition, with the Knights of Ren at his side, Kylo Ren’s new dark side order will be a force to be reckoned with. Like Kylo Ren, the Knights of Ren are said to become even more powerful and dangerous than they were before. They could be the makings of an order that could rival the Sith. If Kylo Ren is defeated and a single Knight of Ren survives, then their order can start anew. If that happens, then the Jedi will rise again through Rey and the Sith will rise again through Kylo Ren’s legacy.

Overall, Kylo Ren will represent what Darth Vader could have been if he overthrew Palpatine and ruled the Galactic Empire in his stead.

KARMATHAUR FILM?

k2

Looking back at Karmathaur’s recent review, I received a very pleasant compliment that I did not see coming. The review said that Karmathaur could potentially be made into a film that would rival Godzilla and Pacific Rim. That was a great compliment that I was not expecting and it meant a great deal. I have viewed Karmathaur as just a simple side project, but this comment implies that it could become so much more than I intended. I will keep this in mind if the opportunity ever arises.

GOODREADS REVIEW: KARMATHAUR

k2

My Kaiju novella, Karmathaur, got a four star review on both GoodReads and Amazon UK today! Here it is:

“From the first line to the first echoing roar of Karmathaur itself, it is clear where the inspiration for the story lies. The story starts with a genetic experiment that is almost thwarted by the police, then moves on a few years later to when the genetically modified and radiation filled zygote (a fertilized egg) has hatched into the monster Karmathaur. We follow a set of friends as they find out about the cult behind the creature’s creation while they battle for survival. The story very much plays out like a Hollywood blockbuster, and like a Hollywood movie it is fast paced, action filled but low on character development. Interestingly the characters start to develop but the one problem with the story halts that, the fact that it is so short. It really follows the blockbuster formula that it is about gruesome deaths and high-octane set pieces. Whilst I am happy with this and soon became aware that this was where the book was heading, there is a sense of loss, that by making it potentially twice the length it could make you feel more for the characters. That said, for a book that costs 99p on Kindle you can not go far wrong, and it could easily be made into a film to rival that of Godzilla or Pacific Rim. The writing is a bit stilted at times but it gets its message across. The one thing that sets this story apart from those films is the end, the hint that this beast, created to destroy the world, might just be more than the sum of its parts.”

NEW SUPERHERO FILM: BRIGHTBURN

I just watched this trailer about a very dark superhero film called Brightburn. It is a horror version of the classical Superman story. Like Superman, this kid came from the sky and was raised by a couple of farmers. However, unlike Superman, this kid never learned how to be human and he failed to learn the difference between right or wrong. Also, to add to the dark nature of the film, the kid was regularly drawing alien symbols that resembled the Brand of Sacrifice from the anime/manga Berserk. Instead of a superhero, this kid becomes a superhuman serial killer. So far, this kid’s powers consist of flight, super strength, possibly telekinesis, and heat vision, but there are bound to be more powers at his disposal. I look forward to this film and see this dark new look at the classical Superman story.

SIZZLE POEM

Great news! I just submitted one of my poems for my university’s literary magazine. I will find out if I got in or not soon and I will keep you updated.

Here is the poem I submitted:

“Chicken crackles inside a metallic bowl.

The sonic sparks send ripples across the kitchen.

Each pop makes the customer’s mouth water.

The noise intensifies as the meat fries.

When the meat flips into the air,

The sizzle briefly turns to a whisper.

When it falls into the pan once more,

The sizzle returns to fill my ears with bliss.

Upon leaving the searing wok pan,

The orange chicken slides into a bowl.

The harmonious sizzling remains,

To entertain my senses with anticipation.

Finally, as I bite into the crackling, fried meat

The sizzle churns in my mouth as the chicken

Is chewed before being swallowed.

Inside my bottomless stomach, the sizzling continues.”
