Martial arts have served as both self-defense and a form of philosophy for thousands of years. Like various manga authors, I often wonder how martial arts would evolve in the distant future. What new offshoots of modern martial arts would develop in the centuries to come? In particular, I am interested in martial arts that combine swordsmanship and hand-to-hand techniques. In my futuristic superhuman series, I am thinking of including a character who has been training in this martial art since they were five. I even thought of a name for this martial art in Japanese.

  1. In my imagination, martial arts stays the same no matter how futuristic our world gets. That’s because as long as human beings stay the same, with only 2 arms and 2 legs, the sort of movements we can make stay the same.

So what a martial artist in the 22nd or 23rd century is pretty much just as limited in his movements as a martial artist from ancient China.

But maybe science gets so advanced in the future that it becomes possible to measure Ki or Chi energy. So it becomes possible to assign ranks or levels to martial artists like they are in some RPG game.

  2. Martial arts have been constantly evolving. The world has gotten a bit smaller and many martial artists like to train in various disciplines. Bruce Lee created the concept of no style, hence, he is given the title of “The Father of Mixed Martial Arts.” But, in imaginary worlds you are trying to make, the skies is the limit.

  3. Hello bro i like ur devotion in martial art,i m martial artist to n poeti made a unique blog website dedicated to jackie chan just visit bro n if u like then share it

  4. One thought, maybe expand your search in the Western Martial Arts. As you probably know lots of weaponry in in the middle ages and its martial arts and philosophy are capture by the modern HEMA studies. Good luck!
