During the trailer for The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker said “it is time for the Jedi to end”. This has given me much to think about. In Return of the Jedi, Luke declared that he was a Jedi like his father before him, but now it looks like he lost his faith in the Jedi way. What made Luke think this way? Does he mean that the old Jedi way needs to end so that a new way can begin? If so, then this would mean that the Jedi of old had gone astray and that Luke may be trying to reinvent the Jedi by trying to achieve a balance between light and dark instead of exclusively adhering to the light. Maybe Luke tried rebuilding the Jedi by using the old philosophy, but ended up making the same mistakes as his predecessors, which led to the fall of Kylo Ren. Maybe adhering to just the light can be just as destructive as adhering to just the dark. This could be reminiscent of when Luke founded the New Jedi Order in Legends, which achieved a balance between light and dark to the point in which they could even use Force Lightning. This made Luke’s Jedi in Legends more powerful than their predecessors. Maybe when Luke said “it is time for the Jedi to end” he could have meant to say “it is time for the Jedi to reinvent themselves.” If this is where Luke’s story is heading in the new Canon, I cannot wait to see it unfold.
